“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20
What an amazing and liberating thought! That our striving, our toil and frustrations in trying to live a moral, religious life has been killed at the cross of Jesus. This doesn’t just apply to “religious” either cause at the heart we are ALL religious. We all toil and strive after something to give us meaning and identity and that makes up our religion, because by faith we believe whatever we are going after will make our lives meaningful.
At the cross, Jesus took that pain, sin and striving after finding our identity and joy outside of God, which is also rebellious sin and killed it and atoned for it. Now Jesus gives us our identity in Him as He lives in us. Our identity is now as a son or daughter of God who is loved, accepted and made to find joy in Him. No more toil, no more frustration cause where all else will fail and ultimately be rebellion against God, the gospel is finished and our identity once found in Christ is secure. That truth leads to freedom and the only real way we can give ourselves to others as an act of joyful service to our Heavenly Father.
